Violin and recorder player Laura Cannell has been described as a “Virtuoso Magpie Musician” by The Times and is best known for her cutting edge early music folk duo Horses Brawl which she founded in 2003. The duo toured the UK extensively for ten years and released several highly acclaimed albums as well as making appearances at major UK festivals and on BBC Radio 3, ITV and BBC4.

Her new solo project Medieval Uprising features atmospheric new interpretations of major medieval composers including Hildegard of Bingen, Guillaumme de Machaut and Mesrop Mashtots (inventor of the Armenian alphabet) performed on double recorders (two played at once) and the rarely heard ‘overbowed’ violin (the bow is taken apart and wrapped around the instrument to create chords). As part of the Medieval Uprising project Laura has developed two short residencies at opposite ends of England, one in Suffolk and one in Cumbria.

The setting for Laura’s Cumbrian show is Wray Castle, a stunning Victorian Folly overlooking Lake Windermere and the Cumbrian fells. The Medieval Uprising Tour includes 13 performances throughout the UK and each performance will be completely unique because Laura will be performing live improvisations based on the music she has researched. Laura will be joined for the Cumbrian show by Stuart Estell (ORE, Lachenalia) and Alison Blunt. All three musicians will also be giving short performances around the castle during the day and may well pop up on the return ferry journey from the castle.

Advance tickets are available now at eventbrite.co.uk

*Please note that due to limited parking at Wray Castle, we would like to encourage audiences to join us for a boat ride to Wray from Brockhole visitor centre.
Combined entry and travel tickets will include return journey from Brockhole by boat, with a connecting minibus calling at Barrow, Dalton, Ulverston, Newby Bridge and Windermere rail station.
There will be a small parking charge per car for those wishing to park at Brockhole, payable at the visitor centre on arrival.
