Julian Weaver - Nearly Present

Julian Weaver - Nearly Present

Julian  Weaver's work, ‘Nearly Present’, was commissioned as part of the Acoustic Commons project and is part of FoN's collection of sound works for Barrow Park. Look out for future showings in 2023.

Julian Weaver is an artist who works primarily with sound. His work focuses on matter, substance and sensing in scientific and historical imaginaries and fictions. Water is a regular component of his practice which ranges from bubble acoustics and seaweed's extractive economies to the charting of hydrogen isotopes in nuclear fusion, from remaking the cold water cures of Hydropathy to exploring the English Channel as a site of nausea.

‘Nearly Present’ is a configurable multichannel streaming installation where the speakers are enclosed in Wardian Cases; a 19th century metamaterial developed to facilitate the global conveyance of living plants in closed environments.

By drawing parallels between, and attention to, historical and contemporary transportations of materials within microclimates, Nearly Present provides routes into exploring the roles that the exotic, the commonplace, and the invasive, play in remote transmission and listening.
