Rebecca invites people to a creative workshop where she’ll share aspects of her own journey in sound and guide participants in a hands on chance to explore the practical, curious and creative processes involved in taking sound recordings. We’ll get out and about in Barrow Park and use our knowledge of other creative processes, like photography or painting to guide us to make a series of recordings.
We’ll focus on how silence frames a recording, how our bodies and movement affect the shape of the sound, how we feel about using and talking into microphones (can we ever enjoy the sound of our own voice!?), and how listening can transform a sound after the event.
The workshop will finish with a listening session, when the recordings will be compiled to form a series of artefacts that capture people and place.

No experience is needed, and all equipment will be provided.

This event is curated by SoundFjord, Octopus curator in residence for 2014/15.

Rebecca Lee is a sound artist/musician, educator and researcher.

Her background is in the academic study of music, with a focus on twentieth century and contemporary performance and compositional practices. Since completing her studies Rebecca has developed a practice that is based on an exploration of our interactions with sound and music. This work has taken the form of site-specific compositions and performances, installations, sound-based publications, and also exploratory participatory projects with schools, arts organisations and other artists. In the past, Rebecca has produced a number of interventions and performances across the UK with the sometime ensemble and band, Los Grecos.

Her recent projects include: a commission to create Great Chorus, a site-specific work for Fermynwoods Contemporary Art’s outdoor interventions exhibition; Encounters alongside Graeme Miller and Jitish Kallat; and being artist in residence as part of Sowing Seeds, East Midlands AiR programme, where she produced The Leaf Song, a collaborative publication with Mumbai artist Vidha Saumya.
